Regular consumption of fish appears to have a favourable effect on cognitive function, and in particular on the rate of decline. The results, published in the journal Scientific Reports and in the paediatric journal Acta Paediatrica, show that young people who eat fish at least once a week obtain IQ scores that are twice as high as those who do not eat seafood at least once a month. In terms of IQ, their numeracy and comprehension skills, as well as their ability to organise images and classify symbols, improve. They also have lower rates of sleep disorders. They sleep better.

Eating fish has positive effects on health, particularly for children. Fish should be part of a child's diet from the age of two. Eating oily fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, plays a role in growth and in the development of nervous tissue, which can improve intelligence. Fatty acids also play a role in the production of melatonin, which regulates sleep and wakefulness. According to researchers, pregnant women who eat oily fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids can protect their children against asthma during childhood. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and fish oil.
