Indispensable to the body, vitamin B12 is mainly found in foods of animal origin. Vitamin B12 is essential for 3 reasons: firstly, it is involved in the formation of hemoglobin, red blood cells and platelets.

Secondly, it is involved in the synthesis of myelin, the substance that surrounds the nerves and enables nerve impulses to be transmitted. Finally, it blocks homocysteine, an amino acid that is a factor in both cardiovascular disease and dementia.

It's a vitally important vitamin, and not just as an anti-anemia agent. B12 deficiency can also be a risk factor for nervous system disorders such as depression, memory impairment and Alzheimer's disease.
