With the arrival of middle age, many men and women notice the appearance of a more pronounced belly. This phenomenon, a source of discomfort or stress, is nevertheless natural.

In women, the drop in estrogen after the age of 35 slows metabolism and encourages the storage of abdominal fat. The intestinal microbiota, altered with age, can cause bloating and chronic inflammation, accentuating the hormonal imbalance.

Slower metabolism leads to muscle and bone loss, while collagen production declines, causing the abdomen to sag. Previous pregnancies can accentuate this effect in some women. Bloating, often caused by poor chewing, eating too quickly or an inappropriate diet, aggravates the swelling of the abdomen. It's essential to pay attention to the quality of your diet and your eating habits.

To mitigate this phenomenon, an anti-inflammatory diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, rich in omega-3s, legumes and whole grains, is recommended. The phytoestrogens contained in legumes can compensate for the hormonal decline. Rather than following a restrictive diet, it's better to adopt balanced, satiating meals, while maintaining regular physical activity.
