When the heart and blood vessels do not function properly, the result is cardiovascular disease. Sometimes these diseases are difficult to detect and may be discovered after other conditions have developed. It's clear that most people today live at a frenetic pace. So much so that they think their bad habits are inevitable in the face of their obligations.

Even if there are habits that are bad for both the heart and general health, there are things we can do that we don't know will have negative effects.

Sitting for too long

Sitting for hours on end increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, even if you exercise regularly. Lack of movement can affect blood fat and sugar levels. Get up from time to time, take a short walk, go up or down the stairs.

Avoid hostility and uncontrolled depression

Do you feel stressed, hostile or depressed? It can have an effect on the heart. The way we deal with these emotions can affect our heart health. Those who are likely to internalise stress are at greater risk; research has shown an advantage for laughter and social support.

Ignoring snoringSnoring can be a sign of something more serious: obstructive sleep apnoea. This disorder, marked by breathing that is interrupted during sleep, can lead to an increase in blood pressure. and the risk of heart disease. If you snore and often wake up tired, consult your doctor.

Gum disease

There is a close link between gum disease and heart disease. If you don't brush, bacteria and plaque build up over time, which can lead to gum disease. Inflammation can promote atherosclerosis.Treating gum disease can improve blood vessel function.

Isolating yourselfPeople with stronger ties to family, friends and society in general tend to live longer, healthier lives. Everyone needs time alone, but you should always reach out to others and keep in touch when you can.

Drinking alcohol

Excess alcohol is linked to a greater risk of increased blood pressure, high levels of fat in the blood, and heart failure. In addition, the extra calories can lead to weight gain, a threat to heart health.

Junk food

Junk food is rich in saturated fatty acids, refined sugars, salt and white flour. It is highly toxic to the body.  If the fats multiply too much, they begin to cover the blood vessels and organs. The arteries become narrow and inflexible, leading to heart problems.

Working too hard

If you work too much, or are under pressure, whether professional, family, emotional or just to be careful, you increase your risk of heart problems.Stress weakens the immune system, increases the likelihood of catching infections and the risk of heart attacks. All because of the variations in blood pressure it causes.

Not getting enough sleep

You need around 8 hours' sleep a night to keep your heart in good condition. This allows your body to prepare for a new day's work. Hormonal disorders caused by lack of sleep can also damage the heart and affect the circulatory system.

Lack of hydration

Not drinking enough fluids encourages the accumulation of toxic substances in the body. If you want to help your heart work properly and improve circulation, drink plenty of water to help eliminate waste products.

Not thinking about heart health

Thinking you can wait to take care of your heart is one of the bad habits of today.Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, heart disease and heart failure are taking more lives in Togo.Avoid assuming that you are not at risk.

Smoking or living with a smoker

Smoking is a total disaster for the heart. Smoking encourages the formation of blood clots, which can block blood flow to the heart, and contributes to the build-up of plaque in the arteries. What's more, non-smokers who live with a smoker die of heart disease every year because of second-hand smoke.

Ignoring fruit and vegetables

Meals should be based on fruit and vegetables, nuts, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and protein. People who eat more than 02 to 03 portions of fruit and vegetables a day have a 20% lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

Ignore physical symptoms

If you're used to walking up to three flights of stairs without any problems, but suddenly you're out of breath or have pressure on your chest, it's time to see your doctor quickly.
