Bronchitis is characterized by inflammation of the bronchi, the ducts that lead the inspired air from the trachea to the lungs. Inflammation makes breathing more difficult because the walls of the bronchi are swollen and produce a large amount of mucus. Bronchitis is accompanied by a deep cough. During bronchitis, medications are often prescribed for coughing. But the effectiveness of these treatments is not obvious, at least in terms of symptom duration. This is what this study carried out in Spain (Rovira i Virgili University, Tarragona). According to the « International Journal of Medicine », persistent coughs can be a major nuisance. However, while cough sedatives, expectorants, decongestants or other products are widely prescribed, there is still a lack of evidence regarding their effectiveness over the duration of cough in bronchitis. The administration of an antibiotic may be justified for other reasons, which it is up to the doctor to assess.
