The Togolese Minister of Security and Civil Protection, Gal Damehame Yark, has warned the Togolese population of the damage that may be recorded over the next two months. A situation that will be linked to the intense rains that the country will face until next June. General Damehame Yark invites the Togolese population to be extremely vigilant. According to the minister, Togo has been facing heavy rains since March. He said that the situation will intensify until June. « Togo will face heavy rains and potential flooding until June. Since March, early and heavy rains have been recorded throughout Togo, especially in Lomé, the capital. The hydrometeorological forecasts for April-May-June indicate that the situation is not likely to subside any time soon », said Gal Damehame Yark on Wednesday 19 April.

Beware of risks

The minister warned in particular against the potential risks of flooding due to heavy rains and possible overflow of natural and artificial retention basins, as well as rivers and water bodies. These predicted bad weather events could cause property damage and pose a risk to nearby communities. The recent heavy rains have already led to the overflowing of retention basins, causing material damage to surrounding populations. In response to the situation, pumping and sanitation operations are underway in several areas, carried out by technical services coordinated by the National Agency for Civil Protection (ANPC).
