Osteoarthritis is a disease characterised by wear and tear of the cartilage, the small whitish « tissue » that covers all joints. However, it is very fragile. It wears out easily and hardly heals at all. This is why osteoarthritis is a progressive disease, which mainly affects older people or people whose joints have been "overworked". The practice of physical activity will first of all make it possible to avoid muscle wasting. Muscles help to maintain the joints, and therefore keep them in good condition.  But that's not all.  It will also stimulate the cartilage in a beneficial way. This is why, if you suffer from osteoarthritis, the worst mistake you can make is to stop all activity: gardening, walking, DIY or sport.

Once the disease has set in, choose disciplines that are gentle on the joints.  These include swimming, walking and cycling. But after all, if you prefer running, why not. The ideal is to enjoy yourself and to measure out your efforts. Also remember to warm up well before you start, and don't forget to stretch, which will also protect your joints. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or a physiotherapist.
