Drinking
enough water is also good for the heart, according to a study presented at the
last European Society of Cardiology Congress in Sophia-Antipolis. Each 1
mmol/litre increase in serum sodium concentration at mid-life is associated
with a 1.11 times greater risk of developing heart failure and a 1.20 times
greater risk of developing left ventricular hypertrophy (increase in the size
of the heart, considered to be a precursor of heart failure). The risk thus
increases from 142 mmol/litre. Serum sodium is an accurate measure of hydration
status: when you drink less, it increases as the body tries to conserve water.
