Pregnant women should not eat too many chips, croquettes and other fried foods. According to research by the University of Maastricht in collaboration with other European universities, the harmful substances contained in the fried food eaten by the mother can be absorbed by the baby. The researchers found carcinogenic substances such as dioxins, PCBs (from burnt fat), acrylamide and nitrosamine in cord blood samples from thousands of newborns. They also checked whether these substances can cross the placenta. Their conclusion is that the placenta does not protect against these substances and the foetus is exposed to them. But the researchers still advise limiting the consumption of fried food and not frying food for too long. They also recommend that food manufacturers pay attention to the quality of their raw materials. However, the most important advice for pregnant women is to vary their diet, not to smoke and not to drink alcohol.
