Sleep
and relationship problems feed off each other, increasing the risk of long-term
health problems. Sleeping less than seven hours and the stress of arguments are
two factors that can increase the body's inflammation level. A risk factor for
diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and chronic disorders. Problems with
money, communication, or in-laws, for example, coupled with lack of sleep can
influence the rate of inflammation.
For
every hour of sleep lost, the levels of the two most important inflammatory
markers increase. These are C-reactive protein, which enables the mobilisation
and activation of white blood cells, as well as the stimulation of
phagocytosis, a well-known process of cell destruction: its high level
indicates that the patient is suffering from an inflammatory disease. Then the
sedimentation rate, i.e. the time needed for the blood cell elements to settle
freely. It is when lack of sleep and stress are combined that there is an
increased risk. When the night is short, arguments tend to escalate.
This
vicious circle has an even greater effect on inflammation, which can increase
considerably for every hour of sleep lost after a major anger. The ideal way to
protect one's health is to sleep at least seven hours a night and to improve
communication within the couple.
