A national cancer control plan for 2022-2025 was
approved on Wednesday 11 May 2022 in Lomé. Four billion CFA francs will be
devoted to research, prevention and care. The aim of the plan is to achieve a
reduction in mortality through rapid treatment of suspected or confirmed cases.
The programme includes making the Institut de Cancérologie operational,
improving technical facilities and making drugs and heavy treatments such as
chemotherapy available. The most common cancers are breast, prostate, cervical
and colorectal. In Togo in 2020, 5,208 cases were recorded, 3,000 of them
fatal. Last March, Togo also set up a Paediatric Oncology Unit (UOP) at the
Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital in Lomé, a new framework for the care of
children with cancer.
