Generally, the very first symptom of seasonal flu is severe physical fatigue. This is also referred to as asthenia. Other symptoms then appear, such as coughing and fever. This phenomenon is easily explained: the flu virus quickly triggers a strong mobilization of the body's immune defenses. This results in a great expenditure of energy, hence the intense fatigue. This fatigue can persist for more than three weeks after recovery: again, this is normal. The immune system has been “worn down” by the illness: the body needs time and energy to rebuild its defenses. Other illnesses during cold spells also cause fatigue, such as nasopharyngitis.

Factors that aggravate fatigue

The intense fatigue caused by the flu can “only” slow down performance, or require several days of sick leave... Various factors increase its intensity and duration, such as: an unbalanced diet, which may be too low in iron, a nutrient essential to the immune system; stress, which is itself a source of fatigue; smoking, which weakens the immune system; insomnia; or the presence of a chronic illness that weakens the body.
