UNAIDS Country Director, Ms Yaye Kanny
Diallo, "congratulated" Monday 1 December in Lomé, Togo for the
"progress" made in the fight against AIDS in recent years,
"despite a difficult environment." It was on the occasion of the
celebration of the 37th edition of World AIDS Day, under the theme:
"Overcoming Disruptions, Transforming the response to HIV". Togo has
chosen a complementary and strategic angle, "Let’s mobilize for the triple
elimination of HIV – Syphilis – Hepatitis B in children." This orientation
is part of regional commitments to simultaneously eliminate three
mother-to-child communicable infections, a major public health issue.
“We are proud to know that at the end of
2024 in Togo, nearly 92% of people living with HIV knew their serological
status, 92% were on treatment, and 85% had an undetectable viral load. We also
appreciate the good coverage of pregnant women in terms of prevention of
mother-to-child transmission of HIV, which is 87% with a rate of HIV
transmission from mother to child at 13%, said Mrs. Yaye Kanny Diallo.
However,
the UNAIDS country director recalls that the fight is far from over. We must
continue to redouble our efforts in technical and financial terms to maintain
our gains, overcome the disruption and reduce new HIV infections especially
among children who have a coverage of 81%-69% 58%. People living with HIV who
are aging and may also face other age-related illnesses should also be given
special attention,”, she said.
The theme of this year’s edition, she said,
"reminds us that AIDS is not yet over and, given the current context, a
new transformative approach is needed to mitigate risks and help us achieve our
goals." Ms. Diallo indicated that challenges still exist, especially among
our children who are still struggling to access treatments
In Togo, the prevalence of HIV among the
adult population (15-49 years) is about 1.6%.
