Two years after the start of its medical imaging service by scanner, the hospital Bethesda of Agou Nyogbo establishes itself as a medical pole of reference for the populations of the Plateau and beyond. Since November 20, 2023, this confessional center affiliated to the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Togo (EEPT) has welcomed 1,871 patients who came to seek a more precise diagnosis, sometimes unexpected, in the face of complex ailments.

A decisive shift for care in rural areas
In a region where access to medical imaging remained limited, the arrival of the scanner marked a medical and social turning point. For many patients, it has finally put a name to unexplained pain, chronic suffering, or persistent states of fatigue.

« Without this scanner, I might not know that I have a kidney problem. I had been suffering for months, but the tests elsewhere showed nothing », testifies Mr. Komlan, a resident of Kpalimé, his eyes filled with relief.

Some cases, once referred to Lomé or left without a solution, can now be diagnosed on site. Early cancers, strokes, internal trauma, malformations, deep infections... So many situations for which CT imaging proves decisive.

« It’s not just a technical tool. It is a lever for equity in access to specialized care », explains Dr. Etiam Sowu, head doctor of the establishment. « We are grateful to God, our partners, and all those who believed in this project. Two years after the launch, we can say that the scanner has prevented many human losses. »

Poignant testimonies

Mrs. Mawussi, mother of three children, remembers: "I was having unbearable head attacks, and even after several treatments, nothing changed. The scan revealed a mass in my brain. Thanks to this, I was able to be directed in time for appropriate management.

For others, like Akouélé, 62 years old, victim of a motorcycle accident, it is the speed of the diagnosis that made the difference: « Without the scanner, they would have had to evacuate me to Lomé. But the team here saw everything quickly, and I was operated on time. »

A technology at the service of a spiritual vision

Born from a dual medical and spiritual vocation, the Bethesda Hospital carries a mission of care centered on compassion and human dignity. The introduction of the scanner has made it possible to further establish this ambition, in a region often on the edge of technological advances.

« Bethesda is like a light on the hill. It’s our pride », says a young pastor who has come to accompany a hospitalized relative.

Over the months, word-of-mouth did the rest. More and more patients, sometimes coming from afar, pass through the doors of the establishment with hope. The medical team, for its part, continues its efforts to maintain a high level of quality in examinations, with rigor, humanity, and prayer.

« The scanner changed the way we look after patients. Now it is necessary to consolidate this progress so that every patient, rich or poor, can benefit from the best of modern medicine here in Agou », adds Dr. Sowu.

Two years after its inauguration, the Bethesda scanner has become much more than medical equipment. It is the symbol of a field hospital that refuses to resign itself, and which, in faith and service, offers its patients what public health promises too rarely: the certainty of being seen, understood, and accompanied.
