Few people know that between 75 and 80% of body mass is made up of water, which is essential for brain and circulatory health. When we don't drink enough water, the body's main systems malfunction and a series of negative reactions can occur that affect our health.

Sooner or later, certain symptoms indicating dehydration appear, along with the harmful effects of dehydration.

Dry mouth

A sticky, unpleasant feeling in the mouth is the result of decreased saliva production due to dehydration. Water consumption acts as a lubricant for the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, which is essential for keeping them healthy and warding off infections.

Thirst

Although it makes perfect sense, thirst is an obvious symptom of dehydration. It is particularly common during a hangover, as alcoholic beverages dehydrate the entire body and lower energy levels.  The brain sends warning signals to ensure it receives the fluids it needs to function optimally.

Dry eyes

Drinking water every day not only helps lubricate the mouth and throat, but also the eyes and other important parts of the body. Dehydration can reduce oxygenation and dry out the tear ducts in the eyes.

Joint pain

The cartilage and spinal discs that protect the joints are made up of 80% water. Therefore, daily consumption of this liquid is essential to prevent bone friction and joint damage. When the body is well hydrated, the joints are lubricated and ready to withstand the impact of daily movements. Water deficiency increases the risk of trauma, premature deterioration and chronic diseases such as arthritis.

Muscle mass is reduced

Muscles are also largely composed of water. This means that the less water there is in the body, the more muscle mass loses strength. Drinking water before, during and after exercise is essential to prevent dehydration and muscle reduction. It stimulates blood circulation and prevents changes in inflammatory processes due to excessive physical exertion.

Exposure to disease

Drinking water is essential for promoting the body's cleansing processes, which remove toxins. Without this liquid, the organs do not function properly and the immune system becomes severely weakened. As a result, the body is more vulnerable to attacks from germs and other agents that cause serious diseases.

Feeling tired

Water is essential for good blood circulation and optimal oxygenation of cells throughout the body. Dehydration not only affects blood flow in the arteries but also prevents the brain from being oxygenated. Lack of water leads to continuous episodes of fatigue, mental weakness and other related symptoms, which prevent you from carrying out your daily activities.

Digestive disorders

The digestive system suffers significant changes when it does not receive enough water throughout the day. Water supports bowel movements and is necessary for normal stool elimination. It serves to moisten ingested food and thus facilitate the expulsion of waste that the body does not need. A lack of water causes the stomach lining to shrink, increasing the risk of acidity, reflux and gastritis. Water plays a very important role in the body, and drinking enough of it can protect against many diseases and keep you healthy.
