Melon is rich in soluble fibre, which plays a very important role in colon hygiene. Soluble fibers absorb water as they pass through the digestive system, resulting in heavier, more voluminous stools. As a result, the passage of stool through the intestine is accelerated, reducing the time during which harmful substances contained in faecal matter remain in contact with the walls of the colon.

Promoting weight loss

Melon is an excellent source of potassium, and can help lower high blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and thin the blood.  Its richness in beta-carotene and water helps eliminate toxins trapped in excess fat, promoting weight loss.

Melon is a good source of folic acid, a B vitamin that helps build DNA, the material essential to the proper functioning of the nervous system and within which the genetic code of each individual is inscribed. This vitamin also helps renew red blood cells and heal tissues in the event of injury or damage. It is also involved in the functioning of the immune system. Its presence is essential for all processes requiring cell division, and therefore for foetal development and child growth.

Folic acid also has protective properties against certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases. It may also play a protective role against Alzheimer's disease and certain depressions. Melons also contain potassium, essential for maintaining normal blood pressure, and are rich in pro-vitamin A or beta-carotene.

How should I eat them?

For maximum benefit, melon should be eaten on its own, preferably twenty minutes before a meal. Choose a ripe melon to ensure maximum nutrient intake. Once cut, the melon rapidly loses some of its vitamins (C and folic acid in particular). Keep cut parts cool and away from light.
