On the night of June 16-17,
2025, the on-call team at the maternity ward of the Centre Hospitalier
Universitaire de Bogodogo performed a medical feat. A seven-month pregnant
woman, who arrived unconscious following an eclampsia attack, was saved along
with her five babies thanks to an emergency Caesarean section. Today, the
mother and her quintuplets, three girls and two boys, are doing well.
It was a night that the medical team at Bogodogo
University Hospital's maternity ward will not soon forget. At around midnight
on June 16, 2025, a 33-year-old pregnant woman was admitted to the emergency
ward in a critical condition. Unconscious, she was suffering from eclampsia, a
serious complication of high blood pressure during pregnancy, endangering not
only her life, but also that of the five babies she was carrying.
Immediately, the on-call team took matters into
their own hands. An emergency Caesarean section was decided and performed in a
context of extreme tension. The gestures were precise and rapid. Thanks to free
maternity care, the patient received all necessary treatment without delay. In
the end, five newborns - three girls and two boys - are born prematurely, at
around seven months' gestation. Against all odds, they breathe. So did their
mother.
The next morning, faces are marked by fatigue,
but also by immense satisfaction. « It
was an absolute emergency, but the whole team reacted with composure and
efficiency, » confides Pr Charlemagne Ouédraogo, head of the
obstetrics and reproductive medicine department at Bogodogo University
Hospital. He praised the professionalism of his colleagues, while making a
strong appeal to pregnant women: «
regular check-ups at health centers. Some complications can be avoided if they
are detected in time »
Today,
the mother and her five children are being cared for in optimal conditions.
Their condition is considered satisfactory by the doctors. The story could have turned tragic. It turned
into a medical miracle, reminding us of the importance of a responsive
healthcare system accessible to all.
