Women with type 1 diabetes during pregnancy have a higher risk of having
babies with heart defects. The risk of birth defects is particularly sensitive
to early pregnancy factors, and blood glucose plays a vital role.
The reason why the risk of abnormality can be linked to blood sugar levels in early pregnancy is that the fetal organs are developing, and many women are unaware that they are pregnant in the first few months. Women can reduce this risk by controlling their blood sugar levels, but it's not easy.
