Walking is often considered one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise. Yet behind this apparent simplicity lies an activity with multiple benefits, not least for heart health. Regular walking strengthens the cardiovascular system, improves blood circulation and reduces the risk of heart disease.
Walking
can be done at any age, at any time of day, and almost anywhere. Doctor Damien
Ekoue-Kouvahey, Sports Physician (Togo), praises the proven benefits for the
heart. “It's a gentle activity that preserves the joints while mobilizing the
muscles, promoting better oxygenation of the body. It's a gentle but powerful
sport,” he emphasizes.
Studies
have shown that 30 minutes of walking a day, five times a week, is enough to
considerably reduce the risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes. “By walking,
the heart gets used to working more efficiently, the heart rate becomes more
stable, and blood pressure tends to fall,” he explains.
Beyond the physical benefits, “walking also
has a beneficial effect on morale. It promotes the release of endorphins, the
feel-good hormones that reduce stress, anxiety and sleep disorders. A calmer
mind also contributes to better heart health,” explains Dr. Damien
Ekoue-Kouvahey.
Start
slowly, especially if you're returning to physical activity. Wear comfortable
shoes. Walk at a brisk pace, without forcing yourself. Make walking part of
your daily routine: get off the bus earlier, take the stairs, organize family
outings. To take care of your heart, a simple daily walk can make all the
difference.
