Optimism is a psychological attribute capable of promoting good health and longevity. This character trait helps people to adopt a balanced lifestyle, thereby reducing health risks. Optimism has a positive effect on mental and physical health. Optimists are less likely to develop chronic diseases and die prematurely. Optimistic people also have a better capacity to recover from stress, and experience less extreme emotional reactions. However, further work is being carried out to determine whether optimism-related improvements translate into better short- and long-term health or not. In the meantime, a little optimism certainly can't hurt. Writing exercises, meditation and certain forms of psychotherapy would be particularly effective in improving our tendency to see a favorable future.
