On
April 27, 2025, the NGO Volontaires Internationaux pour la promotion de la
Santé en Afrique (VISA) held the final of the second edition of the « Cercle
Bleu » competition, an initiative aimed at raising diabetes awareness
among young people. Complexe Protestant d'Agbalepedo took the trophy ahead of
Lycée NDA.
The
finalists, from Lycées NDA, Kouvahe, Agoè, Adidogomé, Complexe Protestant
d'Agbalepedo, NEEA, Institut Saint-François and le Jourdain, demonstrated a
remarkable grasp of diabetes-related issues and the principles of
citizenship. Subjected to various tests,
they not only highlighted the extent of their knowledge, but also helped to
educate the public present about this disease.
The jury, chaired by psychologist Dr Florian Ezui, had the difficult task
of deciding between the particularly deserving candidates. But in the end, it
was the Complexe Protestant d'Agbalepedo that took the trophy, ahead of the
lycée NDA.
Dupraz
Ruth Princesse, representing the winners from the Complexe Protestant
d'Agbalepedo, expressed her satisfaction: « At
the start, we didn't expect it, but we remained optimistic and faced up to all
the challenges. We're really proud of this challenge, and thank the NGO VISA
for everything we've learned and retained.”
Despite the competition, a spirit of camaraderie and pride reigned among
the finalists. « We didn't lose out.
We gave it our all. We're still proud to have been finalists», said Womenor
Josias, representing the NDA finalist team.
Dr
Damien Ekoué-Kouvahey, Executive Director of the NGO VISA, stressed the
importance of this initiative, which contributes to the well-being of learners
and helps combat diabetes and its complications. « Diabetes is taking its toll. We must always educate the future
generation, which are high school students. The main aim of the activity is to
promote academic excellence, stimulate the creative and innovative spirit in
young students, and raise awareness of the challenges associated with diabetes.
If we ignore the threat of diabetes to our young people, if we are not careful
to avoid the burden of diabetes, future generations will judge us on the
adequacy of our responses to the problem of diabetes and non-communicable diseases.
Tomorrow is today, and that's why we've decided to help young people tackle the
problem of diabetes ».
For
Djotan Rosy, General Secretary and coordinator of the Diabetes project, the NGO
VISA has already set its sights on extending the competition to the whole of
Togo for the next edition, building on the success and positive impact of the
first two years.
The
meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Human Rights, the
Ministry of Health, project partners and guests of honor.
