An information and capacity building session for journalists (radio, online and print media) and health promotion focal points of the Gulf region was held on Monday 07 April 2025 in Lomé. Organized by the Ministry of Health, with financial support from Gavi Alliance, this meeting aimed to strengthen the knowledge of the media and health stakeholders on the Expanded Vaccination Programme (EPI), in particular on the vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV). The trainers provided a comprehensive overview of the PEV and vaccine issues, including the objectives, strategies and actions of the PEV for optimal vaccination coverage; The new vaccination schedule and vaccination approaches; The role of the media in social mobilization and the fight against rumours. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer in girls 9 years and older, as well as the management of infodemy during vaccination campaigns.
The trainers welcomed the continued
involvement of media professionals and urged them to step up their efforts to
achieve vaccination coverage targets. Vaccination
is a fundamental part of our health system. It protects children from
preventable diseases and contributes to the overall improvement of public
health. Journalists and communicators play a key role in disseminating reliable
information, raising public awareness and combating misinformation. The meeting ended in a friendly atmosphere,
with renewed media commitment to support PEV actions for improved vaccination
coverage in the Gulf.
