Sitting for long hours is not good for your health. Numerous studies have shown that time spent sitting is directly associated with the risk of overweight, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The logical thing to do is to recommend compensating for this with physical exercise, and in particular with regular “active” breaks. Researchers at the University of Otago (New Zealand) set out to find out whether these breaks could have an impact on blood sugar levels, with a view to controlling the risk of developing diabetes. The experiment was conducted “in the laboratory”, in order to control all parameters. Three groups were set up: sit for nine hours, walk for thirty minutes, then sit for nine hours, sit for nine hours, with a short walk (one to two minutes) every half-hour. Blood tests were then used to measure blood sugar levels. The results, published in “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition”, show that people who take regular breaks have much more favorable parameters than others. So put it into practice every day.
