Soursop (Annona muricata) leaves, also known as graviola leaves, have been
used for centuries in traditional medicine for their health benefits. Among
their many virtues, they stand out for their potential to support
cardiovascular health.
Soursop
leaves contain antioxidant compounds such as flavonoids, tannins and alkaloids.
These substances reduce oxidative stress, a key factor in the development of
heart disorders such as high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. Research
published in the Journal of Medicinal Plants Research has shown that soursop
extracts can reduce markers of oxidative stress, helping to protect heart
cells.
Blood
pressure-lowering effect
Soursop
leaves are traditionally used to regulate blood pressure. Their relaxing effect
on the smooth muscles of blood vessels helps to improve circulation and reduce
hypertension, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. A 2010 study
published in the « International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and
Research » revealed that aqueous extracts of soursop leaves have
antihypertensive properties, helping to regulate blood pressure more
effectively.
Prevention of blood clots
Compounds in
soursop leaves can act as mild anticoagulants, reducing the risk of blood
clots. This helps prevent serious events such as heart attacks and strokes. The
« Etude chimique des plantes à flavonoides du Togo » (1990)
highlighted the anticoagulant properties of soursop leaves in medicinal use
against heart disorders.
Recipe: Take 7 fresh or 10 dried soursop leaves.Boil the leaves in 1 litre
of water for 10 to 15 minutes. Filter and drink 2 cups a day, preferably in the
morning before breakfast and before going to bed in the evening. In the event
of heart problems, always consult a health professional for a diagnosis and
appropriate follow-up.
