The Prime Minister Victoire Tomegah-Dogbé presided on Friday 15 November 2024, the ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the future Cancer Treatment Cancer Treatment Centre. The anti-cancer centre will be housed at the 1st BIR camp in Agoè-Gnamassi. This large-scale event brought together members of the heads of public institutions.
The construction of this center marks a major
milestone in strengthening the country's healthcare infrastructure. Designed to
serve the population more closely, the center aims to reduce cancer-related
mortality rates by offering accessible services, high-quality treatments, and
comprehensive patient care.
A Turning Point in Cancer Care
According to the Minister of Health and Public
Hygiene, Dr. Tchin Darre, the center represents a decisive step forward in
combating cancer in Togo:
"Cancer is a major public health issue. It is essential to acknowledge
its impact on patients, their families, and society. This center will be the
first public facility dedicated to serving all citizens, thereby guaranteeing
the right to health for everyone," he said.
A Symbol of International
Partnership
This project is part of a collaboration between the
Togolese government and AME International, an Austrian specialist, supported by
Austria.
"Cancer knows no boundaries. It affects us all, either directly or
indirectly. This project aims to improve cancer treatment in Togo and embodies
the strong partnership between our two countries," noted Thomas
Schelsinger, Austria's ambassador to Togo.
Modern and Innovative Infrastructure
Spanning 1,600 square meters, the future center will
feature state-of-the-art equipment to provide specialized care and meet the
growing needs of cancer patients. It will include:
- Two linear accelerators (LINACs) for
high-precision radiotherapy.
- A planning scanner to optimize diagnostics and
treatments.
- A complete brachytherapy system for localized
treatments.
- A nuclear medicine department dedicated to
advanced diagnostics and patient monitoring.
These modern facilities will enable comprehensive
care, covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
A Broader Effort to Modernize
Healthcare
The construction of this center is part of a series of
initiatives undertaken by the government to modernize the Togolese healthcare
system, particularly in addressing non-communicable diseases. These projects
aim to ensure more efficient and accessible healthcare infrastructure.
By investing in cutting-edge technologies and
strategic partnerships, Togo is positioning itself to provide high-quality
healthcare and effectively combat cancer, a disease affecting millions
worldwide.
With the launch of this center, the Togolese
government reaffirms its commitment to public health and its ambition to build
an inclusive, innovative, and sustainable healthcare system.
