Diabetes is a chronic disease that
results in high blood sugar levels, also known as hyperglycemia. Complications
of diabetes affect the quality of life of affected men and women. In
households, for example, the incidence of this pathology on libido is very
often a source of tension or even several divorces.
Dr Pierre Kaboré, internist and
diabetologist at the Pissy Medical Center with Surgical Antenna (CMA), in
Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), explains that diabetes has a profound impact on
sexuality in men and women. These sexual disorders are felt in the homes,
because there is always the husband or wife who suffers. “It is the nerves
and organs that are most affected in diabetes, what we will call chronic
complications. It confirms that patients who develop chronic complications have
sexual disorders. In men, very often, it can first have erectile weakness, that
is, there will be a soft erection or even difficulties to get back into
erection,” says the doctor.
Beware of the
consequences
“Man can make early ejaculations or retrograde ejaculations
(the ejaculation of sperm in the bladder). The doctor says that the woman’s
libido will be reduced. She is practically not interested. When the husband
approaches her, it sometimes even gives her a dislike because she does not want
to do so at all. He says that in addition to the decrease in libido in women,
she also has vaginal dryness. So when there is an increase in diabetes, it will
exacerbate the effects, that is to say, vascular problems will be much more
pronounced, nerve problems will also be much more pronounced. So, it will be
reflected on the sexual organ that also requires blood. If there is a
dysfunction in sexuality, it goes without saying that the tranquility in the
couple takes a blow,” says Dr Pierre Kaboré,
an internist and diabetologist.
Diabetic women can be exposed to infections, particularly
fungal infections. “Mycoses develop in the presence of moisture and sugar,
so they find a very favorable terrain in women. The consequence is that these
complications make sexual intercourse painful,” says Dr Pouinkonba Patrice
Sawadogo, an endocrinologist on duty at CHU-Yalgado Ouédraogo (Burkina Faso).
A solution to improve sexuality
To improve the sexual quality of a
couple, the person living with diabetes must avoid having these sexual problems
already. “When you have diabetes, you should see a doctor. First, if
diabetes is not very advanced, any health worker can help provide advice for
the diet, can already help even make some prescriptions of medication”,
“Patients must also be open to their doctors so that they can offer them the
right treatment,” says Dr. Pouinkonba Patrice Sawadogo, endocrinologist.
To improve your sex life, you first need
the patient’s management of diabetes. This means regular consultation, proper
follow-up of treatment, balanced and varied diet and physical activity.
