After
the regions of Greater Lomé and Kara, the National Health Insurance Institute
(INAM) organized a free medical consultation campaign in the Maritime region
from September 2 to 12, 2024. This campaign, which covered all six prefectures
of the region, began in the cantons of the Vo prefecture. The population turned
out in large numbers to benefit from free medical care. This initiative is part
of the promotion of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The
aim of this health initiative is to provide medical care to the population and
also to collect reliable health data on vulnerable people in preparation for
the upcoming implementation of the medical assistance scheme.
By
the end of the campaign, 6,250 people had received free medical consultations.
This figure represents a major success, demonstrating the impact of the
initiative in a region where access to healthcare remains in need of
improvement, particularly in rural areas, despite the government's ongoing
efforts in this field. The consultations covered a range of healthcare
services, from general consultations to screenings for chronic diseases such as
hypertension, diabetes, and other common conditions in the Togolese population.
6 Prefectures and 34 Localities Covered
The
campaign covered six prefectures in the Maritime region, including Vo, Yoto,
Lacs, Avé, Zio, and Bas-Mono prefectures, reaching a total of 34 localities.
This extensive coverage allowed the campaign to reach remote rural communities,
which often lack the means or opportunity to regularly consult healthcare
professionals. Thanks to this mobile campaign, these populations had access to
essential healthcare services, thus reinforcing the government’s goal of
achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which aims to guarantee equitable
access to healthcare for all Togolese citizens.
Meeting Local Health Needs
The
campaign addressed several public health challenges in the region. It not only
treated illnesses but also raised awareness among the population about
preventive measures for certain conditions such as malaria, respiratory
infections, and non-communicable diseases. The medical team on-site also used
this opportunity to inform beneficiaries about the importance of Universal
Health Coverage (UHC), which is a key pillar for ensuring sustainable access to
healthcare.
INAM and Universal Health Coverage
(UHC)
Universal
Health Coverage (UHC) aims to provide healthcare coverage for the entire
Togolese population, particularly the most vulnerable. The mobile free
consultation campaign aligns with this goal of making health insurance
accessible to all. INAM continues its efforts to raise awareness and
progressively integrate new beneficiaries under UHC, in line with its mission.
The free medical consultation campaign in the Maritime region has thus
demonstrated that access to healthcare for all is an achievable goal, provided
efforts continue in this direction.
The
National Order of Physicians of Togo (ONMT), the African Center for
Epidemiology and Public Health Research (CARESP), and the National Volunteering
Agency of Togo (ANVT) once again partnered with INAM to ensure the success of
the campaign.
