Monkeypox
is rife in certain regions of the world, particularly in Africa. It has been
declared a continental and international public health emergency by the CDC
Africa and the World Health Organisation respectively. It is a contagious virus
that can infect people of any age. It is spread by direct or indirect contact
with blood, body fluids or lesions on the skin or mucous membranes of infected
animals. Close contact with infected respiratory secretions or skin lesions, or
with objects contaminated by biological fluids, can be the source of
person-to-person transmission.
The
disease generally manifests itself as fever and pimples on the skin, sometimes
accompanied by other non-specific signs. According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health on Thursday 15 June 2024, Togo has not recorded any
cases. However, epidemiological surveillance is being stepped up at all levels,
especially at entry points, to ensure early detection.
Faced
with this situation, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene is urging people
to be extra vigilant and to adopt the following behaviour to avoid contracting
this disease: wash your hands properly and regularly with clean water and soap
or ash, especially after handling animals; protect your nose and mouth when
sneezing or coughing; avoid all contact with the blood and other biological
fluids of a suspect person. In the event of any suspicion, inform the staff at
the nearest health centre so that they can be treated quickly and
appropriately.Monkeypox can be cured if detected and treated early in a health
centre.
