Every 28 April, the world observes World Day for Safety and Health at Work (WDOSH). It's an important opportunity to raise awareness and mobilise people around the crucial issues of safety and health at work, and to take concrete action to create a safer working environment for all. ILO News reported that around three million workers die every year from work-related accidents and illnesses, an increase of more than 5% since 2015. This figure highlights the persistent challenges in terms of workers' health and safety.

« Health and safety are fundamental values that must be at the heart of our concerns, whether in our workplaces, our communities or our homes. We need to reflect on the importance of these aspects of our daily lives and renew our commitment to their preservation.Together, we form a community dedicated to promoting a safe and healthy working environment.Whether it's by adopting safe working practices, encouraging healthy lifestyles or making those around us aware of potential risks.Every action we take contributes to creating a better world for ourselves and for future generations », says Benjamin Piténiwè Takpara, Quality, Health, Safety and Environment Consultant.

Avoiding work-related accidents and illnesses

The shadow of occupational accidents and diseases hangs over the world of work.Millions of workers around the world fall victim to these scourges every year, with devastating consequences: physical and mental suffering, loss of income, disruption to businesses.

« Prevention is the central pillar in the fight against accidents at work and occupational illnesses. It involves identifying occupational risks, assessing their impact and implementing measures to eliminate or reduce them. There are many ways of preventing accidents at work and occupational illnesses. These include improving working conditions, raising awareness of occupational risks, training workers and developing a culture of prevention within companies », explains Dr Silvère Kevi, Occupational Physician, Head of Occupational Medicine at the Ministry of Health.

The occupational physician points out that Togo has a well-stocked legal arsenal in this area, but implementation is still struggling because there is a lack of commitment on the part of those involved, especially employers. « But employees also need to be able to access information and demand their rights by forming a trade union. That's why we've organised this day, to raise awareness of occupational health and safety issues, which are often relegated to other demands, even though they are fundamental », he says.

Well-being at work is becoming a key issue for many employees. Companies are reinventing their human resources policies

In Togo, JMSST was marked by an awareness-raising session held on Friday 26 April by Career Academy Institute. The aim is to create a positive impact in communities by promoting health and safety at work. The theme of the event was « A safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work ».
