Northern
Togo is currently experiencing the onset of the Harmattan, a dry, cold and
dusty wind that encourages the emergence of various illnesses such as coughs,
colds, flu and, above all, the dreaded meningitis. The Ministry of Health and
Public Hygiene is warning against the risk of contagion and issuing
recommendations to protect against these diseases.
The
press release issued by the Ministry of Health on 08 November 2023 places
particular emphasis on cases of meningitis, "a contagious disease that manifests
itself essentially as a sudden onset of high fever, stiff neck, coma or altered
consciousness, headaches, vomiting and convulsive seizures". Professor
Moustapha Mijiyawa shares essential advice on how to avoid the spread of these
diseases.
Avoid dusty environments
Prof.
Mijiyawa's first piece of advice is to avoid staying in places exposed to high
concentrations of dust. During the harmattan period, it is essential to limit
the time spent in dusty environments to reduce the risk of developing
respiratory ailments.
Protect your nose and mouth
We
recommend that you cover your nose and mouth when sneezing, coughing or in any
other high-risk situation. This simple measure filters out some of the airborne
particles and prevents the inhalation of potentially harmful dust and germs.
Protecting yourself against the cold
During
the harmattan period, temperatures can drop considerably. Prof. Mijiyawa
recommends dressing appropriately to protect yourself from the cold and
strengthen your immune system.
Wash your hands regularly
Hand
washing is one of the most effective hygiene practices for preventing the
spread of disease. Using soap and water removes germs from your hands, reducing
the risk of infection.
Avoid close contact with sick people
Meningitis,
in particular, is a contagious disease. It is crucial to avoid close contact
with people suffering from infectious diseases to limit the spread of
pathogens.
Getting vaccinated
Prof.
Mijiyawa stresses the importance of vaccination in protecting against
preventable diseases. He encourages people to consult healthcare professionals
to check and update their vaccination schedule.
Seek medical advice quickly if you have
symptoms
If
you develop symptoms of respiratory or infectious diseases, you should go to
the nearest health facility. Prompt and appropriate treatment can make all the
difference to the course of the disease.
