Ministry of Health has issued a warning to the public about the use of certain
medicines to treat colds and flu. In a press release issued on 27 October 2023,
the Minister of Health, Prof. Moustafa Mijiyawa, advised against the use of
oral pseudoephedrine-based medicines without the advice of a health
professional.
Against
the backdrop of a wave of cases of flu and colds that has been raging for
several weeks in Togo, the Ministry of Health is warning the public about the
use of certain medicines. It strongly advises against the use of oral
pseudoephedrine-based medicines without medical advice.
Pseudoephedrine,
a component frequently used in the treatment of colds, flu and allergies to
clear nasal passages, is at the heart of this warning. The Ministry is warning
of the risk of serious, even fatal, adverse reactions affecting the heart and
brain if these drugs are used inappropriately.
Prof.
Moustafa Mijiyawa stresses that close monitoring is currently underway to
assess the impact of these drugs and take appropriate decisions in the public
interest. He also reiterates the basic measures to be taken in the event of a
cold or flu, including the use of appropriate washing solutions and hydration,
and stresses the importance of avoiding self-medication.In view of the recent
increase in cases of flu and colds in Togo, vigilance and caution in the choice
of treatments are more important than ever, for the sake of everyone's health.
