« 5
Km on foot » is an innovative initiative to combat breast cancer. This « race
for women » is scheduled for 07 October in Lomé and 13 October in
Atakpamé. Registration is already open and is continuing online.
Supported
by the « All for Change » association, the "5 km on foot"
project is now in its second year. The idea was born out of the shared desire
of a number of young people to find lasting solutions to their community's
problems.
« 5
Km on foot », to say no to breast cancer
« This
year, we want to cover Lomé in a wave of pink to fight against the most common
and deadliest cancer in women », is one of the key
objectives of the organisers.
Breast
cancer, says the association on its website, is the most common cancer among
women in the world. In 2020, 2.2 million cases were recorded worldwide.
According to statistics from the Ligue Togolaise contre le Cancer, more than
850 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in 2020, with a mortality rate of
more than 70%.
« This
alarming situation is due to the gap between what women think they know about
breast cancer and what they actually know. There is a huge amount of work to be
done in terms of information, particularly in terms of prevention and early
detection », say the promoters.
A
WHO study revealed that half the women who die of breast cancer are under 50. The
5Km-à-pied is therefore committed to working alongside the Togolese League
against Cancer and local associations working to combat this scourge. »5Km
à pied », more than just a walk.
Participation
in the « 5 km on foot » race for women is free of charge, with the
possibility of registering as a team or group with no limit on the number of
participants. The theme is « Cancer is not a fatality »,
highlighting the determination of those involved in the fight against the
disease.
Much
more than an annual event, it's a rallying cry to preserve lives and ignite
indomitable courage in women.
« Pink
October » is fast approaching, and All for Change is taking the
opportunity to offer all women free breast cancer screening. One of the key
objectives of the pink run is to spread prevention messages, in particular the
need for regular mammograms (the target is to reach 6,000 women directly).
Through this action, the players also intend to highlight the actions and progress of the Togolese League against Cancer. A community of members committed to the fight against breast cancer will be set up. Other activities are also planned.
Registration is ongoing at https://5kmapieds.com/je-minscris.
