Air pollution is bad for your health. That's why the WHO sets limits. At 15 microgrammes per cubic metre (μg/m3) over a 24-hour period for the density of PM2.5, these particles with a diameter of no more than 2.5 microns that can penetrate our lungs or even our blood, or 5 μg/m3 on average over a whole year, for example. The problem, researchers at the University of Chicago (USA) have now revealed, is that all the world's populated regions are now exceeding these limits. In Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, for example, the average PM2.5 density approached 90 μg/m3 in 2020. And this is having an impact on life expectancy.
